Evidence Based Teenage Pregnancy Prevention

Evidence Based Teenage Pregnancy Prevention

Better Futures for Children advocates and supports dissemination and implementation of evidence based school and after-school teenage preventions programs, interventions and practices. Available research suggests that teenage pregnancy and motherhood rate in Kenya stands at 18%, implying that 1 out of 5 teenage girls between 15-19 years have either had a birth or are pregnant with first child. The consequences of teenage pregnancy on adolescent girls are severe on health and educational outcomes for the pregnant teens: acquisition of STI/HIV infections, school discontinuation, suicidal ideation. A number of factors are implicated in teenage pregnancy: individual, family, community and systemic policy issues.

Despite research findings that evidenced based teenage pregnancy prevention programs, interventions and practices are more effective and sustainable, there is limited dissemination and implementation of evidence based teenage pregnancy prevention programs, interventions and practices in school and community settings in Kenya. Mobilizing school and community stakeholders to support the dissemination and implementation of evidence based school and after-school teenage prevention programs, interventions and practices is a priority for schools and communities in Kenya.
