Management Team

Dr. Isaac Abuya leads and manages the operations of Better Futures for Children according to the strategic direction set by the board of directors. He leads and oversees operations, finances, programs, staff, and volunteers and drives the strategic planning, fundraising, and stakeholder relationships to achieve Better Futures’ mission and goals.

He provides strategic direction across all Better Futures practice areas and approaches and ensures that programs are delivered on time and budget to the satisfaction of the funders, stakeholders and the adolescents and youth being served. Dr. Abuya has over 20 years’ experience in managing high impact programs and grants for most vulnerable and at-risk children, adolescents and youth in and outside Kenya.

He served as the Project Director of the USAID funded Aphiaplus Western Kenya Project that positively impacted over 500,000 most vulnerable children, adolescents and youths in 14 counties in Kenya, served as the Behavior Change Specialist Coordinator for a multi- regional USAID/ PEPFAR funded HIV Prevention Program that targeted 1,000,000 vulnerable and at risk children, adolescents and youth in Kenya and Tanzania, was the Social and Behavior Change Communications Manager for the USAID/PEPFAR funded Kenya National Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision Program and was the Programs Coordinator for a CDC funded HIV/STI Prevention Program among adolescents and young adults in Kisumu.

Dr. Abuya worked as high school teacher as university lecturer for over 10 years and was the first Chief of Staff of the County Government of Homa Bay, where he managed the UNDP funded Making Devolution Work Program.

Dr. Isaac Abuya holds a Ph.D. degree in Project Planning and Management, a Master of Arts degree in Project Planning and Management from the University of Nairobi, a Bachelor of Education degree from Egerton University, and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Educational Management from Kenya Education Staff Institute (KESI), and holds professional certification in Performance Management from the Kenya School of Government, Masterclass certification in Balanced Scorecard from the Balanced Scorecard Institute, and certificates in Program Development and Program Evaluation from Minnesota University.
